World Design Capital – Exploration of Design Values with City as the Origin

World Design Capital is an event founded by the International Association of Industrial Design Societies, and since 2008, every two years, it has selected a city around the world to carry out various design-related projects, and for the chosen city as a center of international creativity and innovation, and in addition to attracting innovative investment as well as promoting economic development, it can also serve as a guide to international design trends. The concept of World Design Capital reinforces the scale of having cities as design catalyst, and determines how to use the city as the main axis, boundary and exploration of the origin of the design so as to create interaction between design and society, culture, economy and environment, as the ideological prototype of such Design Capital. As a city taking pride in its high degree of design development, Taichung City also attempts to promote its unique design value and spirit through participating in the competition of World Design Capital.

Domain Spatial Structure – Display Domain Constructed by the Entrance, Corridor and Living Room of City

This project is the International Pavilion that Taichung applied for as its effort in participating in World Design Capital, and for the industrial plant located the old alcohol distillery,, the concept of “people-oriented, bottom-up, not design-oriented”, by the World Design Organization was adopted in synergy with urban entrance, urban corridor and urban living room. The theme of the city entrance symbolized the 10 cities that have been selected as the World Design Capital in the past. With the city flower being the main representative color, they were extended along the linear highly axial urban corridor. And on both sides of the narrow walkway space, the two sides of the wall are presented with the background and design of each of the chosen city, showing the different aspects of the design capital. At the end of the corridor, the open square display space being the urban living room, and in the field of black color, the general public in these ten cities shall be invited to express their different views on the design through film presentation. As extending from the corridor, it represents the axial segments of each design capital, each of the separate blocks, and the end points of each segment show the point of departure of how the city designers can manifest their respective perspectives, as generational perspectives suggest how design can elevate and transform their environments.

Design of Broad Thinking – Design Discourse Built from Ground Up with Interaction

In this "urban pulsation" theme plan, the main spirit to be conveyed by the voice of the design from listening to the bottom layer of the design, built from the bottom up. At the entrance, triangular prototypes were created in the form of tables, from bottom to top, from small to large stacking into an inverted trapezoidal component, a metaphor for design is about events frequently encountered by people in daily life, the discourse closely related to the thoughts of everyday people. This concept was also implemented in the design of the exhibition area with interactive installations for visitors to understand the design they have come to know well, to reflect and think through such Taichung-based design, and they can express their thoughts freely, and recorded as content to be uploaded to cloud for publication, as a consolidated discussion and exchange of ideas and sentiments, in constructing a diverse and multi-valence discussion with depth and horizon.
